The City of Nîmes is set to deliberate on several important issues during its Municipal Council meeting on September 28, focusing on access to healthcare, early childhood services, youth engagement, and the promotion of a culture of peace.
As part of its commitment to peace, Nîmes will propose joining the French Association of Communes, Departments, and Regions for Peace (AFCDRP-Maires pour la Paix France). This initiative aims to connect with an international network of local authorities working on education, human rights, equality, solidarity, and conflict prevention, while also advocating for nuclear disarmament.
Addressing the growing challenges in accessing healthcare, the municipality intends to strengthen local general medicine services. The Council will be asked to authorize the city to seek membership in the public interest group 'Ma Santé, Ma Région', led by the Occitanie Region, to prepare for the establishment of a polyvalent, community, and university health center in Nîmes. This move comes in response to a significant decrease in general practitioners and a rise in residents without a primary care physician in the city.
The new nursery at Mas de Mingue, which opened in new premises on May 4, 2026, will be officially renamed the Miriam Makeba nursery starting October 1. This name change, chosen by the families, honors the South African artist renowned for her activism for human rights and against apartheid.
Furthermore, the City of Nîmes will welcome 20 young volunteers for civic service. These individuals, aged 16 to 25, will participate in public interest missions for 6 to 12 months, contributing to enhanced youth civic participation, fostering their autonomy, and supporting various municipal projects across different sectors.
