On Monday, October 12th, the Lourdes Socio-Cultural Center hosted a training session for future flag bearers. Four high school students responded to the call to learn the gestures, codes, and profound meaning of this mission at the heart of patriotic ceremonies.
Led by Colonel Daniel Lavigne and Jacques Seyrés, a veteran and member of the National Union of Combatants (UNC), the session aimed to impart the expertise of the Lourdes Patriotic Circle. Also present was Jean-George Crabarie, delegate councilor for patriotic associations, who came to meet the engaged young people.
Colonel Lavigne first emphasized the importance of the flag bearer's role, noting they are "always in front," on the front line, with the flag symbolizing the French Republic. He explained that each association has its own traditions and a precise order is followed during ceremonies, with the flag being a universal symbol of blue, white, and red.
Their commitment extends beyond commemorations to include the funerals of veterans, where the choice of flag depends on the deceased's background. Flag bearers also participate in educational institutions, from primary schools to high schools, thus contributing to the transmission of memory.
“"It is essential that young people become aware of the importance of volunteering."
Jean-George Crabarie praised the students' initiative, inviting them to participate in upcoming patriotic ceremonies. "We make it a point of honor to preserve them to keep the history of our valiant combatants alive," he stated, highlighting the relevance of this memory in the current context of global conflicts. He also mentioned military careers and reserves as "rich learning" environments.
This training, open to all young people, aims to raise awareness about the importance of the Duty of Remembrance and volunteer engagement. For further information, contact Info Jeunes at 05 62 94 31 51 or 06 07 52 70 27, or by email at info.jeunes@ville-lourdes.fr.
