In response to the rise in accidents involving electric scooters, the prefect of the Hérault has decided to strengthen protective measures for users in all municipalities of the department.
Between 2024 and 2026, the department recorded 138 injured individuals, 46 hospitalizations, and 7 fatalities related to the use of these devices.
From now on, users must mandatorily wear a helmet and a retro-reflective vest.
After a one-month awareness period, non-compliance with these obligations may result in penalties. The absence of a retro-reflective vest will be punishable by a fine of €35, while the absence of a helmet could cost €135.
Other rules remain in effect: a minimum age of 14 years, a maximum speed of 25 km/h, one rider per scooter, prohibition of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, ban on using phones or headphones, mandatory insurance, regulatory equipment, and adherence to traffic lanes.
Protecting yourself and being visible can save a life, even on a scooter.
