The City of Nîmes is introducing fines for not wearing helmets on motorized personal mobility devices (EDPM) starting October 14, 2026, following awareness campaigns.

The Nîmes Municipal Police will begin issuing fines to users of motorized personal mobility devices (EDPM) who do not wear helmets starting Wednesday, October 14, 2026. This measure follows an awareness and control period that began in July 2026, during which approximately 400 reminders of the regulation were issued.
Nicolas Nadal, Deputy Mayor for Security, Tranquility, and Public Spaces, emphasized the importance of this measure: « I am aware that changing behavior takes time, education, and then firmness and patience. The results will be measured over time. Our objective is clear: to allow everyone to travel safely, with respect for all and for the sharing of public space. »
Since July 17, 2026, the Municipal Police have conducted ten awareness and prevention operations in the city center of Nîmes. These actions reached 262 EDPM users before August 25, and then 112 users in September. Two official reports were filed on September 3 and September 24 for riding outside of bike lanes.
In addition, 66 official reports were recorded in September for various EDPM-related infractions, including using a mobile phone (25), riding with a modified motor (15), carrying a passenger (14), running a red light (4), riding on sidewalks (3), riding against traffic (3), having smooth tires (1), and riding in pedestrian areas (1). Thirteen EDPMs were impounded for motor modification or lack of insurance.
Systematic weekly controls will begin on October 14. Failure to comply with the regulations is subject to fines of up to 150 euros.
