Fifteen young junior doctors, including 13 in general medicine, will begin their fourth year of internship in the Gers department starting November 1, 2026, thereby reinforcing the medical presence in the region.

From the beginning of November 2026, 15 junior doctors will join the Gers for a year of real-world training. Distributed across several communes and the Auch hospital center, they will benefit from the #Dites32 initiative of the Departmental Council to discover the territory and potentially establish their future practice there. Among them, 13 junior doctors in general medicine will start their fourth year of internship in various communes, while two junior doctors in specialty will join the Auch hospital center. This arrival is a significant opportunity for the department, which faces challenges in healthcare access and the renewal of health professionals.
The junior doctor status, created as part of the reform of the third cycle of medical studies, marks a step towards the autonomous practice of medicine. These doctors, having already defended their thesis, practice with supervised autonomy under a referring physician. Gers currently has 15 referring physicians to support these young practitioners in their final year of internship. During this period, they gradually take on more responsibilities in patient care, including consultations, diagnoses, and prescriptions, under the supervision of their referent.
The objective is twofold: to consolidate their skills in the field and facilitate their transition to autonomous medical practice. For residents, this initiative translates into increased medical presence in several areas. Thirteen junior doctors in general medicine will be welcomed in Auch, Aubiet, Eauze, Fleurance, Le Houga (part-time), Mauvezin, Mirande, Plaisance-du-Gers, Riscle, Samatan, and Vic-Fezensac, with some communes hosting two each. The two junior doctors in specialty will practice at the Auch hospital center. This reception relies on the commitment of local health professionals, particularly referring physicians and internship supervisors.
The #Dites32 mission of the Departmental Council, launched in 2016, aims to attract and retain these health professionals in the Gers. 80% of this new cohort has already completed one or more internship semesters in the Gers with the support of #Dites32, and over half have benefited from its assistance in finding accommodation. The goal is to transform this year of training into a sustainable professional project, through personalized support including discovering the region and practice opportunities. For the past ten years, #Dites32 has facilitated the establishment of over 60 doctors in the Gers.
“

"The arrival of these 15 junior doctors is a concrete opportunity to strengthen medical presence in the department and prepare for the next generation. With one objective: to ensure that these young doctors are not just passing through, but that they choose to settle permanently in the Gers tomorrow. This is the entire purpose of our Dites#32 mission"

Philippe Dupouy · President of the Departmental Council of Gers

"Our #Dites32 mission is a regional benchmark for medical attractiveness. For 10 years now, we have been fighting against medical desertification impacting our department, with very positive results. More than 60 doctors have been supported by this mission in their establishment."
