The restoration of 'The Apotheosis of Gervais and Protasius', a significant piece of local heritage housed in Lectoure Cathedral, commenced on September 21, 2026. The work, led by Erell Davoli, is scheduled to continue until mid-December.
This preservation project is made possible by a €8,000 sponsorship from Allianz France, highlighting corporate support for cultural heritage.
Dating back to the 17th century, the canvas depicts the cathedral's patron saints, Gervais and Protasius, alongside their parents, Saint Vital and Saint Valerie, with the Virgin and Child above. The background features the recognizable silhouette of Lectoure's bell tower.
Over time, the painting has suffered from age, showing deformations, tears, and cracks. Furthermore, significant grime and a yellowed old varnish have darkened the colors, obscuring the artwork's details.
This restoration effort aims to restore the full legibility of 'The Apotheosis of Gervais and Protasius' and preserve this important testament to the history of the cathedral and the city of Lectoure for future appreciation.
