After 237 days in weightlessness, French astronaut Sophie Adenot's return to Earth was a trying experience. The atmospheric re-entry aboard the Dragon capsule was marked by intense G-forces and a radio blackout due to ionizing plasma. "You really feel like an elephant is sitting on your upper body," she described, struggling to breathe.
Despite practicing yoga to focus on her physiology, the sensation of regained weight upon landing was striking. "The first thing I said was: 'Send me back to space right now,'" she confided. She also stressed that humanity was "not ready" to go to Mars, pointing to physiological challenges such as orthostatic intolerance and vestibular system disruption.
However, Sophie Adenot's initial medical results are "absolutely astonishing." Contrary to expectations, she experienced no loss of muscle mass or bone density, and even noted an increase in certain body areas. This unprecedented outcome is attributed to a rigorous method focused on restorative sleep, careful nutrition, and an unwavering sports routine, exceeding medical recommendations.
Her current rehabilitation and scientific debriefing program will span six months to a year. She emphasized the importance of transparent communication about her difficulties, sharing "difficult moments as well as moments of joy." She has already regained a significant portion of her capabilities and is continuing her reconditioning program.
The astronaut also recounted her three extravehicular activities, describing the wonder of seeing Earth from space, despite the technical challenges and the need for intensive mental preparation to avoid vertigo.
