The annual report on transport in Occitanie for 2025 reveals mixed trends. New vehicle sales decreased, influenced by high prices, rising credit rates, and stricter emissions penalties. Both private individuals and professionals are reassessing their needs and investments.
New passenger car registrations fell by 5.3% in the region, mirroring a national trend. However, electric vehicles saw a rebound in sales (+3.7%), capturing a 22.5% market share. Hybrid powertrains dominate sales with 48% (+8 points). Sales of internal combustion engine vehicles (petrol and diesel) continue to decline (-31%).
In the light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment, sales in Occitanie grew by 1.3%, bucking the national trend. Hybrid and electric vehicles are gaining ground, while diesel remains dominant but slightly down. Definitions for LCVs and heavy goods vehicles are provided.
New industrial vehicle registrations decreased by 15.2%. Diesel remains predominant (97%), but electric vehicles, though small in share, are increasing. Sales of trucks and tractor units are down, while those of specialized vehicles (VASP) are up.
The regional vehicle fleet stands at 3.8 million passenger cars, with an average age of 11.2 years. The extended lifespan of vehicles is slowing down renewal despite fiscal incentives. Electric and hybrid powertrains continue to grow, but the fleet remains predominantly internal combustion engine (nearly 90%).
Road freight transport experienced a significant decline. Tonnages entering, leaving, and within the region all decreased. Heavy goods vehicle traffic on motorways, after an initial rise, contracted over the months.
Passenger air traffic in Occitanie fell for the first time since 2020 (-2.3%), primarily due to a decrease in international traffic. The airports of Toulouse-Blagnac and Montpellier-Méditerranée recorded lower passenger numbers.
Maritime freight traffic saw another year of growth (+3.5%), driven by the port of Sète, which handles 77% of the region's port freight. The ports of Port-la-Nouvelle and Port-Vendres also reported increases.
Regarding rail transport, the TER LiO Occitanie network saw its ridership increase by 68% between 2019 and 2024. The region also benefits from Intercités and TGV services. Rail freight shows signs of recovery.
