Established in 2003, this commemoration day pays tribute to the Harkis and their families, who served alongside France during the Algerian War. Many faced abandonment and painful exile after the conflict.
This morning, the mayor of Agde, Aurélien Lopez-Liguori, accompanied by the deputy for the 7th constituency of the Hérault, Bernard Chaumeil, as well as elected officials, patriotic associations, and flag bearers, led a solemn tribute ceremony. For the first time, the newly formed Classe Défense participated in this event.
The mayor highlighted the pain of these North African men and women who remained loyal to France but were "abandoned by the French state." He recalled that "few stories are more painful than those of the Harkis," a pain embedded in history and families.
This day serves to remember their commitment and courage, but also to pass on this memory to future generations, ensuring its lasting place in national history.
