The Prefect of Hérault, Chantal Mauchet, accompanied by the Sub-Prefect of Béziers, Jacques Lucbéreilh, met with the Mayor of Pézenas, Armand Rivière, on Friday, October 9th, to review major municipal projects and territorial issues.

During a working session at the town hall, followed by a site visit, nine key initiatives for the future development of Pézenas were presented. These projects aim to guide municipal actions and address community needs.
Among the flagship projects are the adaptation of schools to extreme heat with a 'freshness plan' costing approximately €800,000 over four years, the modernization of sports facilities, and the restoration of heritage sites, including the Saint-Jean collegiate church and the Consular House. Securing the Butte du Château is also a priority.
The territory is also committed to the 'Territory Zero Long-Term Unemployed' project, whose employment-based company awaits the law of perpetuation after being authorized in February 2026. Additionally, two renewable heat networks and a thermal spa project will utilize local geothermal resources.
The town's development also includes the creation of a new district, Saint-Christol, which will host a future gendarmerie barracks. The Hérault Méditerranée Agglomeration Community is leading a multimodal exchange hub and the renaturation of the Peyne river.
Discussions also covered the specific challenges for a town of 8,000 inhabitants serving a wider area of 38,000 people. Revitalizing the old town center, security, the costs of centrality, and supporting cultural actors, such as the Printival festival, were central to the exchanges.
The delegation then visited the future site of the multimodal exchange hub, which receives €960,000 in state support through the 'Fonds vert'. The visit also included the Chapelle des Pénitents Gallery, the new Avenue de Verdun, the Saint-Jean collegiate church, and the Consular House, whose restorations are supported by the Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs.
The visit concluded at the Butte du Château, where stabilization work is planned on the wall that collapsed during storm Nils, to allow the park's reopening to the public.
