The democratic adventure has resumed in Lunel with the election of new members to the Children's Municipal Council (CME). Since September 24th, 87 CM1 and CM2 students from the city's 8 schools have been campaigning for a mandate. A total of 680 young voters participated in this election.
This year, parity was a key focus, with 51 girls and 36 boys running as candidates. On Thursday, October 8th, from 9 am to 10:30 am, the polling stations opened. Accompanied by city officials and municipal staff, the children, equipped with their electoral cards, selected a girl-boy pair in the voting booth before casting their ballots into the ballot box.
In the early afternoon, starting at 2 pm, the vote counting began, also supervised by the children under the guidance of elected officials and municipal agents. It should be noted that 16 children will be elected, with an equal split (8 girls / 8 boys), and two representatives per school will be responsible for proposing projects for Lunel's youth.
At the Victor Hugo school, the results were announced by Mayor, Paulette Gougeon. After congratulating all the candidates, she revealed the elected pair and outlined the next steps for the young councilors: the installation council on Monday, October 12th, followed by a visit to the Town Hall and its services on October 14th, the day she will also welcome the CME to her office.
In Lunel, democracy and citizenship are also experienced at a child's level.
