The acts of violence that took place this Saturday, targeting law enforcement, public buildings, urban furniture, and numerous businesses, are deemed "deeply shocking and unacceptable" by the mayor of Montferrier-sur-Lez, Frédéric Gueydan. He emphasizes that the right to protest, while fundamental, cannot justify vandalism and looting, highlighting the importance of respecting people and property in a state of law.
Frédéric Gueydan expressed his support for the affected towns and their mayors, specifically mentioning the city of Limoges, whose town hall was partially destroyed, as well as the hard-hit businesses in Montpellier.
The mayor also commended the work of law enforcement, elected officials, and municipal agents who were mobilized under difficult conditions, particularly those from Montpellier Méditerranée who are working to restore damaged areas.
"These acts of violence must not be trivialized or excused. Their perpetrators must answer for them before justice," he stated. In response to these events, he calls for unity around republican values and invites the public to a gathering in front of the town hall of Montferrier-sur-Lez on Monday, October 19, at 6:30 PM.
