Alain Fabresse, Mayor of Ille-sur-Têt and Vice-President of the Têt Mixed Basin Authority, welcomed on September 11 the first steering committee for phase 2 of the assessment of the Têt Water Resource Management Plan (PGRE). The event brought together stakeholders involved in water management in the region.
Implemented between 2019 and 2024, the PGRE included 83 planned actions with a projected budget of 27.7 million euros. The assessment shows significant engagement, with 78% of actions initiated, amounting to 15.1 million euros in expenses, including 11.9 million euros in subsidies.
The actions carried out have led to improvements in drinking water networks, modernization of some irrigation canals, enhanced knowledge of water resources, and the development of monitoring and awareness tools.
The assessment also indicates a downward trend in water abstraction, particularly in agriculture, with an estimated decrease of 36% between 2014 and 2024, approximately 90 million m³. However, this data should be treated with caution due to a significant lack of reliable and consistent data.
Despite these efforts, the structural water deficit in the Têt remains unresolved. Drought episodes, particularly severe between 2022 and 2024, and the effects of climate change are intensifying tensions between different water uses and the needs of natural environments.
This initial assessment phase aims to draw lessons from the 2019-2024 period and prepare future responses. The next phase will focus on evaluating the PGRE and formulating recommendations for the future Water Management Territorial Project (PTGE).
Alain Fabresse emphasized the collective responsibility to continue the work, enhance resource knowledge, and build a more proactive water management system adapted to climate change realities.
