Following complaints from residents about damage caused by the roots of Chinese parasol trees, the municipality of Caveirac has had to decide to cut down several of these trees. This action comes in a context of disputes related to tree roots that were reportedly not planted at the legal distance of 2 meters from fences.
Several neighborhoods in the town have already undergone similar tree removals. The roots of these trees have caused cracks in boundary walls and deformed sidewalks. There is also a risk that these roots could cause further damage to utility connections.
The local government expressed regret over this decision, describing it as 'heartbreaking'. They plan to replant tree species with less invasive root systems that are better suited to the local environment and climate.
