As part of October Rose, the Gers Departmental Council highlights the crucial importance of early breast cancer detection, especially for women in rural areas where geographical distance can be a barrier. The Mammobile, a mobile mammography unit, has been deployed to overcome these challenges by reaching women closer to their homes.
Usage figures demonstrate the initiative's effectiveness: by October 15, 2026, 2,754 consultations were carried out in 58 communes. Eleven positive screenings were identified in 2025 and 2026, requiring further examinations and appropriate care. The Departmental Health Center has established a follow-up process in coordination with general practitioners and gynecology services to support affected women.
This initiative relies on collective commitment. The ARS finances the operation, and APM09 provides the vehicle and radiology technician. The CPAM and MSA assist in identifying eligible women, while the Regional Center for Cancer Screening Coordination, the Ligue contre le cancer, and the Mutualité Française help disseminate information. Staff from the Departmental Health Center manage coordination, and the host communes play a vital role in community outreach.
The Mammobile will continue its tour through the Gers in November and December, visiting towns such as Plaisance, Termes-d’Armagnac, Eauze, Mauvezin, Lectoure, and Tournecoupe. The Departmental Council thus reaffirms its commitment to combating territorial inequalities in healthcare access.
