An initiative by the Syndical Council and Toulouse Métropole Habitat enabled residents of the Cité Madrid, both tenants and owners, to come together for a moment of sharing and conviviality during a September evening. The event, organized as a potluck ('auberge espagnole'), served to strengthen community bonds.
During this gathering, the origin of the neighborhood's name was discussed. Contrary to a common belief that the Cité Madrid was built to house Spanish refugees in the 1930s, its construction was voted on by the City Council several years prior. The name actually comes from a former 'guinguette' (riverside tavern) named « Le Madrid » that was located on the site.
Today, the Cité Madrid, situated near the Garonne River in the Sept-Deniers district, has evolved while maintaining a strong neighborhood identity. This vitality is expressed through several local initiatives: the successful renovation of the 1930s buildings by Toulouse Métropole Habitat, the sale of social housing ('vente HLM') enabling some residents to become homeowners, a genuine social mix, a community-maintained shared garden, a monthly free flea market ('vide-greniers') allowing residents and passers-by to acquire items for free, a cycling association, a homework help association, and an association supporting women victims of violence.
