This distinction highlights the mission's importance, a collaboration between the Chinese space agency CNSA and France's National Centre for Space Studies (CNES), with significant contributions from the CEA and CNRS. Launched in June 2024, SVOM aims to prove the link between gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and the merger of compact objects, as well as their connection to gravitational waves.
Utilizing an agile satellite and a network of robotic telescopes, SVOM rapidly disseminates precise alerts. Since its launch, the mission has detected 358 gamma-ray bursts and measured the distance for over 60 of them. A notable event was the detection of GRB 250314A on March 14, 2025, linked to the collapse of a massive star in the early universe, an observation later confirmed by the JWST satellite.
The success of SVOM, led by a Franco-Chinese team, demonstrates how integrating space and ground-based observations pushes the boundaries of cosmology and astrophysics.
