In response to increasingly intense severe weather in 2026, agents of the Hautes-Pyrénées Department mobilized to secure roads after several significant events.

In February 2026, Storm Nils hit the department with unprecedented force for February, with destructive gusts reaching 134 km/h in Tarbes and up to 170 km/h at the Pic du Midi. Facing saturated ground and thousands of uprooted trees, the Department's teams immediately responded to landslides and critical avalanche risks.
The Department's services managed major road closures, such as the RD 918 from Gripp to La Mongie, in coordination with local communes and the Grand Tourmalet ski resort.
On August 8, 2026, an impressive landslide covered the RD321 at the entrance to Gèdre (commune of Gavarnie-Gèdre). Over 10,000 m³ of material was cleared by agents from the Roads and Mobility Directorate (DRM) and the Park, working tirelessly day and night.
Thanks to their efforts, the Prefecture approved the reopening of the RD 921 under alternating traffic on Monday morning, with full restoration by Tuesday noon.
On August 15, 2026, violent summer storms caused mud and rock flows in the Tourmalet pass, Barèges, and La Mongie areas, cutting off several routes. Road services immediately began emergency clearing operations in Barèges and managed the overflow of the Adour river in La Mongie, securing the road surface and implementing traffic restrictions.
