The University of Montpellier is a partner in the European doctoral program TERRA-MED, with a budget of 8.1 million euros, which will train 33 researchers on environmental challenges in the Mediterranean.

The TERRA-MED program, coordinated by the Pyrenees-Mediterranean Euroregion and funded by Horizon Europe, focuses on issues related to water, land, and energy in the Mediterranean. It will enable the recruitment of 33 doctoral candidates in the regions of Occitanie, Catalonia, and the Balearic Islands.
Facing the consequences of climate change, TERRA-MED aims to train a new generation of researchers capable of interdisciplinarily understanding the interactions between water, land, and energy. The program involves universities, research organizations, and socio-economic actors from the three territories.
The doctoral candidates will benefit from an international and intersectoral training environment, fostering the development of new knowledge and solutions for the environmental challenges facing Mediterranean territories.
The University of Montpellier will host eight theses within this program. It will be the main supervisor for four of them, while four others will involve researchers affiliated with UM. The Institut Agro Montpellier will host a ninth thesis.
This participation reinforces UM's expertise on major environmental issues, particularly biodiversity, vector-borne risks, and water management. The university leads key challenges in these areas.
With a total budget of €8.1 million, including €4.4 million in funding from the European Union, TERRA-MED aims to enhance the international attractiveness of doctoral research across the European Mediterranean space.
