During the All Saints' Day holidays, the primary school in Espalais began courtyard greening work to improve student and staff well-being and reduce the heat island effect.

While students enjoy their All Saints' Day break, greening work has commenced in the courtyard of the primary school in Espalais. The objective is to enhance the well-being of students and staff by reducing the heat island effect caused by the mineral courtyard during spring and summer, and to beautify the surroundings.
The de-sealing of the ground (removal of asphalt) will help decrease heat emission from the soil. The planting of vegetation and trees (to replace diseased trees that were removed) will increase the shaded area.
This type of operation is part of the adaptation solutions for climate and environmental change that the municipality and the Communauté de communes aim to implement. This project will also contribute to improving rainwater management through natural infiltration and will aid in the re-establishment of biodiversity (insects, birds...).
The school in Saint-Antoine du Pont d’Arrats will undertake the same program. Other projects are under consideration for schools in the Deux Rives area.
