The decline in birth rates across France is directly impacting school class sizes. In the Pays de Lafrançaise region, a decrease of more than 10% in student numbers is anticipated within the next four years. Currently, the area has 850 students, but nearly a hundred fewer registrations are expected for the 2030 school year if this trend continues. To address this situation, the state has initiated a nationwide experiment aimed at reorganizing the school system based on living areas.
Tarn-et-Garonne is the sole department within the Toulouse academy to participate in this national initiative, which will run from 2026 to 2030 and involves 18 French departments. In this context, Cyril Le Normand, the Departmental Director of National Education Services, met with local elected officials to involve them in the planning process. Following a presentation of the current school network and educational offerings in the Pays de Lafrançaise, education officials also highlighted the impact of school size on student academic success.
A collective reflection on the future organization of schools is underway. Elected officials and all educational stakeholders in the region will convene in early October. They will discuss issues related to proximity, pedagogy, educational pathway continuity, and logistics, all while considering the child's daily rhythm. The findings from these discussions are expected by October 15th and will inform the National Education Services' further analysis.
