The 2026 summer season revealed more cautious holidaymaker behavior, with tourist numbers lower than in previous years. From May onwards, a discreetness in consumption habits was observed, with visitors frequenting local shops and services while avoiding restaurants.
In June, overall tourist traffic continued to decrease. Although holidaymakers returned to dining out, they largely shunned leisure activities. The summer was particularly quiet, with travelers drastically reducing spending on leisure, restaurant outings, and shopping, focusing more on advice and free alternatives from tourist offices.
In August, stays in traditional accommodations and restaurant outings were limited. Consumption refocused pragmatically and almost exclusively on local shops and services, which became the main beneficiaries of visitors' summer budgets. These findings come from economic surveys conducted by Gard Tourisme.
A survey of tourism professionals in Provence Occitane confirms a contraction in activity in 2026. 70% of respondents noted a decrease in activity compared to 2025, and nearly 65% declared themselves little or not at all satisfied. 60% of establishments recorded a drop in spending per visitor.
Climatic conditions and weather are considered the primary impact factor (over 80% of respondents), followed by purchasing power (74%) and the impact of media and news (71%).
Despite this mixed assessment, the overall evaluation of events organized by Provence Occitane is positive, with praise for the free or quality services, the expertise of the speakers, and the originality of the unusual formats offered.
