For over a decade, the Agglomeration and the Chamber of Agriculture of Gard have joined forces to ensure water quality while safeguarding local agriculture.

Water, an essential common good, requires equitable sharing. Agriculture, dependent on this resource, is strongly committed to adopting good practices aimed at minimizing its environmental impact.
The drinking water abstraction points of Cornillon, Saint-Gervais, and Saint-Marcel-de-Careiret, classified as priority due to their strategic importance for supply, are threatened by diffuse pollution. Protecting these resources at the source is the main objective.
Targeted actions are being carried out on plots adjacent to these abstraction points. Farmers are receiving support to adapt their practices, reduce their impact on water resources, and limit or even eliminate herbicide use.
The evolution of cropping systems is also supported, including the choice of grape varieties more resistant to drought, improved soil water management, and the use of practices that promote infiltration and natural water storage. A meeting in 2025 allowed for discussions on crop diversification, considering plot characteristics, water availability, consumer expectations, and farm development capacities.
Agropastoral and vitipastoral initiatives, combining livestock and viticulture, have also been encouraged. These practices provide livestock farmers with winter fodder resources and help winegrowers reduce vineyard maintenance, while promoting biodiversity and soil quality. Over 1000 hectares are now available for grazing, reflecting strong solidarity among farmers.
These initiatives reconcile water resource preservation with agricultural adaptation to climate challenges. The long-term commitment to ensuring quality drinking water relies on the cooperation and mobilization of all territorial stakeholders.
